Button-Less Port-Less Vivo APEX 2019 Concept Phone with Snapdragon 855 Unveiled

Vivo APEX 2019 phone official concept

We were amazed when Meizu took a step forward on Wednesday by announcing its button-less port-less Zero smartphone, but here we are with another Chinese company taking the exact route of innovation to give us a glimpse of what a smartphone will be like, will look like, in the near future.

Vivo today unveiled a new concept phone that it is prepping behind-the-scene for the year, the APEX 2019. For the most part it is button-less - no physical navigation buttons whatsoever; the power and volume keys use capacitive touch panels that blended well with the metal frame.

The phone add a 3D curved glass back to its premium touch, while the display takes the whole front. There are no speaker, front camera and earpiece in sight - this enabled the display to stretch far and wide without any hindrances, resulting in a nearly bezel-less form factor when behold.

As a matter of fact, the sound is delivered by a piezoelectric transducer through the screen, a sound technology that may become more common in 2019 as more brand embrace this sort of tech innovation. Like Meizu's Zero phone, there are no port whatsoever on the APEX 2019 except one; Vivo called it MagPort. It is a magnetic connector located at the bottom on the phone back for charging and data transfer.

If there is one thing that makes this Vivo concept phone stand out, it is the Full-Display fingerprint scanner embedded on the screen. This will enable users to unlock the phone by placing their fingers almost anywhere on the screen. We can't wait to see this fingerprint biometric solution make it out in 2019, though that is unlikely seeing that the in-display fingerprint biometric solution hasn't even gone far.

The full specs sheet of what the APEX 2019 will offer is still under wraps, but we do have some details. It will features a 6.39-inch AMOLED display, packed a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core 7nm chipset with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage coupled along, while there will be 13MP+12MP dual camera at the back. It is not clear at the moment if it will have a front camera, a sliding one or pop-up, or none at all.

Supports for 5G is guaranteed for the APEX 2019 in case you are wondering, but it is likely that Vivo might opt in for eSIM. No details on the battery capacity and wireless charging. The company does not revealed if it will be waterproof neither - guess we'll have to wait to find out. Since this is a concept phone, the final product might be different.

The phone will be showcased at the annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona next month.
