Sonim XP8 Rugged Smartphone Outs in the U.S on AT&T, Costs $700

Sonim XP8

Sonim is a California-based technology company that is specialized in the manufacturing of rugged mobile phones and accessories. The company latest addition to its rugged device portfolio is XP8, a bulky hard-coded jungle survival aimed at factory workers, construction workers and the likes that works in harsh environments. The phone is not only build to last but to survive in the most extreme conditions where other phones might fail.

It is military grade MIL-STD 810G certified and it can withstand extreme high and low temperature, pressure, and humidity. The custom hardened rubber casing makes it shock-proof and drop-proof as well. Moreover, the Sonim XP8 waterproof and dustproof abilities is IP69 rated, so it can survive in high pressured water. Its survival instinct further goes down to its compact 5-inch Full HD (1920x1080) touch-sensitive display, which can be operated with wet hand and glove hand. The display is puncture-resistant too.

Moving on, the XP8 has a lot of physical buttons, and that's a good thing because physical buttons are easy to memorize than touch keys. At the front below the display is the back, home, and menu buttons; at the left side is the power and volume buttons, while a dedicated SOS button and a Push-to-Talk button are located on the right. Perhaps, another interesting feature that separates the device from the rest of its family is its extremely loud speakers. Sonim claimed the XP8 comes with speakers with 100dB+ sound output which is not something you see every day on a mobile. This comes handy in noisy environment as the speakers are capable of drowning noise.

The phone runs Android OS, Nougat to be precise, is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset with Adreno 508 GPU, and it includes 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage (up to 128GB). It comes loaded on the back with a 12-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and phase detection auto focus (PDAF), while an 8-megapixel camera sits at the front for selfie and video-conferencing.  Connectivity onboard includes WiFi 802.11ac (dual band), Bluetooth 5, 4G VoLTE, 3G, GPS, NFC, and USB Type-C. The battery is 4900mAh rated, which should last for more than a day.

AT&T is already selling the phone in the United States for $699.99. Three years warranty is included for every purchase.
