Hitachi's storage division has been bought by Western Digital, but currently still exists independently. That's good news, as the Hitachi Deskstar 7K4000 4TB hard disk is the best high-capacity hard disk. It's worth noting that, if you install it in a PC, Windows will split it into two NTFS partitions of 2048GB and 1678GB. If you're running another OS, such as Linux, or install the disk in a NAS, alternative file systems should be able to handle the entire disk.
The SATA3 disk is certainly fast, with a write speed of 151MB/s and a read speed of 160.4MB/s in large file transfer tests, producing an average speed of 154.8MB/s. Its performance when it came to writing small files was less impressive, at just 32.4MB/s but its small file read speed is a blistering 71.7MB/s, producing an average of 52MB/s. Although the Deskstar 7K4000 4TB excelled in our large file transfer tests, proving to be one of the fastest HDDs we've ever seen, its handling of small files was a little inconsistent.
However, at just 4p per gigabyte, there's no denying that this hard disk is excellent value. Considering you get a five year warranty included, the Hitachi Deskstar 7K4000 4TB wins a Best Buy award.
