Samsung Gear 360 2017 Edition Brings 4K Video Recording and iOS Supports

Samsung at its unpacked event few hours ago announced the much awaited Galaxy S8 and S8+, but unexpectedly the company also launched an upgraded version of its Gear 360 camera at the event with sleek design and improved performance over its predecessor.

The new Gear 360 2017 edition now offers 4K video recording at 24fps in addition to its full-HD (1080p) video recording capability at 60fps, in MP4 format. While previous Gear 360 camera was restricted to only pair with few Samsung smartphones with Android operating system only, the 2017 edition brings the supports of iOS and will even work on MaC PCs. Another notable feature is its ability to live stream or upload contents directly to social media such as YouTube and Facebook when paired with supported devices.

Technically, the Gear 360 (2017) sports dual 8.4-megapixel CMOS sensors with f/2.2 aperture that can capture up to 15MP (5472 x 2736) still image with both lenses turned on, and up to 3MP (2304 x 1296) still image with a single lens in JPEG format. The cameras offered HDR, Time Lapse, Geo-tagging (via smartphone) and other enhancements, and there is a MicroSD slot on the side that can accept up to 256GB of additional storage.

The device is dustproof and splash-proof certified with IP53 ratings. Connectivity options onboard includes Bluetooth 4.1, WiFi 802.11ac (dual band), WiFi direct, and USB 2.0 Type-C. According to Samsung, the Gear 360 (2017) 1,160mAh battery can renders up to 130 minutes (2hrs 10mins) of 2560x1280 video recording at 30fps in a single charge.

Samsung and Apple smartphones supported are Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy Note5, Galaxy A5 and A7 (2017), iPhone 7, iPhone 7+, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S+, and iPhone SE, running Android 5.0 upward or iOS 10.0 upward.

Samsung is yet to reveal pricing and availability details of the device.
