Tizen-based Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and Gear S3 Classic Launched

Samsung at IFA event in Berlin on Wednesday announced its latest Tizen-powered smartwatch, Gear S3. The wrist gadget comes in two variants, Gear S3 Frontier and Gear S3 Classic. Besides the difference in their look and design, both versions sports nearly the same specifications. These features 1.3-inch circular Super AMOLED Always-On display with 360x360 pixel resolution protected by Corning newly released Gorilla SR+. The always-on feature enables the display to reflect time even in idle mode without consuming battery.

The Gear S3 Frontier looks rugged on the outside and seems strong enough to withstand drop and hard knock while the S3 Classic is simpler in design and will easily blend in with office suit dress, as its name implies it is simply classic. The Gear S3 band can also be swap with any 22mm watch bands. One of the notable features of Samsung third-generation Gear S3 watch is its rotating bezel, which enables users to pick or hang calls and dismiss notification alerts without touching the display.

The watch is water and dust resistance certified with IP68 ratings and comes with a built-in speaker that lets users listen to music and voice messages. NFC and MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) onboard enables support of mobile payment using Samsung Pay. It also comes with a built-in GPS for smart activity tracking. The Gear S3 Frontier supports 4G LTE but the Classic does not. Other connectivity options included are Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi, and GLONASS.

Bases on Tizen Wearable Platform 2.3.2, the watch comes with SOS feature that can be trigger even without a smartphone, this gives users the ability to alert friends and family incase something goes wrong.

In technical aspect, the Gear S3 smartwatch is powered by an unspecified 1.0GHz dual-core processor coupled with 768MB of RAM and 4GB storage. Sensors onboard includes Accelerometer, Ambient Light, Gyroscope, Barometer, and Heart Rate. It is turn on by a 380mAh battery with support of wireless charging, claimed to last up to 4 days in a single charge. The Frontier weigh 62 gram and the Classic 57 gram, both measuring 46 x 49 x 12.9.

The Gear S3 Classic pricing is speculated to be around $299 but there is no word on Gear S3 Frontier pricing. Both are expected to be available sometime in October.
