Gorilla Glass 5

Corning has officially announced Gorilla Glass 5, the company's fifth-generation protective glass for handheld and mobile devices. The company in November 2014 launched Gorilla Glass 4 which can survive a drop of up to one meter without breaking eighty percent of the time, now, the new Gorilla Glass series is claimed to be even more stronger. Unlike its predecessor, it can survive a drop face-down up to 1.6 meter without breaking eighty percent of the time.

According to John Bayne, Vice President and General Manager of Corning:

"With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels. GorillaGlass 5 is no exception, extending Corning’s advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses. With many real-world drops occurring from between waist and shoulder height, we knew improving drop performance would be an important and necessary advancement.”

The Gorilla Glass 5 is twice damage resistance when compare with Gorilla Glass 4, and offers four time improvements over competitive glasses. Production has begin and we should start seeing it on devices before 2017.
