Tecno Phantom 5 VS Phantom Z

Tecno Mobile launched Phantom 5, its latest flagship smartphone, and most highly specd device outs by the company in 2015 earlier this week. The "Phantom" name came into existence in 2014 when Tecno launched its first Android 4.4 KitKat smartphone, Phantom Z, one of the device that has got it all during that time (and yes, till now). But many things has changed since 2014, we now have new chipsets, latest Android operating system just to mention few.

Is Phantom 5 really here to replace Phantom Z? It looks much like that, but there are still some factors worth considering. If you're one of those still using Phantom Z, we know you have lots of questions in mind to ask. We can do the guesswork, one of the questions will be, which is most powerful, Phantom 5 or Phantom Z? What's the difference between both? Can Phantom Z still stand a chance against Phantom5 after a year of its existence? and more. In this article, we will be highlighting major differences and similarities between both by comparing their key specifications. These should answer some of the questions. Just keep reading.

Display:

Phantom 5 -> 5.5-inch IPS display, full-HD (1920x1080 pixels) resolution, 401ppi pixel density
Phantom Z -> 5.2-inch IPS display, full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) resolution, 424ppi pixel density

Note: Phantom 5 is a strong contender against Phantom Z in this aspect. Tecno has upgraded the screen size by 0.3-inch but left the resolution as it is. The pixel density doesn't really make any difference, but the screen size does. If you don't mind a slightly larger display, then you can option in for Phantom 5. You get same vivid color, sharpness on both device.

Processor And RAM:

Phantom 5 -> 64-bit 1.5GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6753 processor, Mali-T720 GPU, 3GB RAM
Phantom Z -> 2.0GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6592 processor, Mali 450 MP4 GPU, 2GB RAM

Note: MT6753 is one of the most commonly used MediaTek chipset nowadays, especially by Chinese phone manufacturers. Latest Gionee, Huawei, ZTE, Zopo smartphones just to mention few make use of this chipset. It is based on 64-bit architecture, this gives it more advantage over the now dated 32-bit MT6592 chipset, their overall major difference. However, the MediaTek MT6592 is a "true octa core" processor and can be scaled up to 2.0GHz, while MT6753 can only maintain up to 1.5GHz clock speed and doesn't have true octa core identity. In performance and data processing, Phantom Z will outrun Phantom 5, but in multitasking, Phantom 5 will outrun Phantom Z. The 2GB RAM doesn't help Phantom Z much either, so, Phantom 5 is definitely going to handle your games pretty well.

Camera:

Phantom 5 -> 13-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, 8-megapixel front camera with *LED flash (*not yet confirmed)
Phantom Z -> 16-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash; 8-megapixel front camera with LED flash

Note: 13-megapixel vs 16-megapixel. The number of megapixel doesn't really affect the quaility of pictures taken, but it does affect its quantity, or should we say resolution. Tecno doesn't detailed camera specs of both device, their aperture, lens type e.t.c but we expect Phantom 5 to capture picture as good as Phantom Z.

Storage:

Phantom 5 -> 32GB of built-in storage, external storage supported
Phantom Z -> 32GB of built-in storage, external storage not supported

Note: Tecno has decided to add external storage support on its latest machine which is quite good. Lots of space to have fun with.

Connectivity:

Phantom 5 -> Dual-SIM (Micro), Bluetooth 4.0, Wifi, 4G LTE, 3G HSPA+, GPRS/EDGE, GPS, FM radio, and Micro-USB.
Phantom Z -> Dual-SIM (Mini + Micro), Bluetooth 4.0, Wifi, 3G HSPA+, GPRS/EDGE, GPS, FM radio, and Micro-USB.

Note: The 4G LTE in Phantom 5 is a welcome development. Though major network providers in Nigeria are yet to implement and embrace 4G platform, it will prove very useful when they does in near future.

Battery:

Phantom 5 -> 3,000mAh battery.
Phantom Z -> 3,030mAh battery.

Note: Both will have roughly the same battery life. The "roughly" may positively favour Phantom 5 though.

Operating System:

Phantom 5 -> Android 5.1 Lollipop.
Phantom Z -> Android 4.4 KitKat

Note: Latest operating system means more features, options, security, and advance settings. Phantom Z can't supercede Phantom 5 in these segments.

Tecno Phantom 5 Advantage Over Phantom Z

Tecno Phantom 5 posses one unique feature which is Fingerprint sensor. It is the first device released by Tecno to have such functionality, and yes, first smartphone launched in Nigeria to come with one. This placed Phantom 5 far ahead of Phantom Z.

Each single thing has its own uniqueness as they always say. Phantom Z has ruled for more than a year now, but finally, Phantom 5 is here to take its place and carry on. Takes it place? No, not all. Phantom 5 is hefty in price (costs a whooping #69,999) and thats a huge advantage for Phantom Z which costs less than #63,000.

Update

Tecno Phantom 5 is now available for purchase in Nigeria. As we already predicted, the phone costs more than its predecessor, but thats only because it has more features to boast of. As at now, it is priced at #74,499 ($374 USD) on Jumia store. Pricing might lessen as time goes on, that's if you can wait.
