Tecno Camon C8 VS Phantom Z

While we are waiting for Camon C8, Tecno first Android Lollipop powered smartphone to go on sale which may be anytime from now, we think it'll be fun enough to go back in time and pick from one of the notable device the firm has released in the past. We couldn't find one notable enough as Phantom Z which was the company's first Android 4.4 KitKat smartphone. It was officially launched in July last year and it remains the best highly-specd Android phone ever released by Tecno.

Can you smell the fun? For those who can't, we'll be comparing Tecno first KitKat smartphone Phantom Z with its first Lollipop device Camon C8. Can Phantom Z still stand a chance against Camon C8 after a year? What does it has that is missing in Camon C8? Bet you can't wait to find out. We'll be highlighting their key specifications, pointing out their differences and similarities. Just keep reading.

Display:

Camon C8 -> 5.5-inch IPS display, HD (720x1280 pixels) resolution
Phantom Z -> 5.2-inch IPS display, full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) resolution, 424ppi pixel density

Note: When it comes to big screen both can chest out. The 0.3-inch missing in Phantom Z to rival Camon C8 is well repaid with full-HD resolution it packs which Camon C8 flatly lacks. You'll get more crisp, sharper, vivid colour on Phantom Z than on Camon C8 in every angle.

Processor And RAM:

Camon C8 -> 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, 1GB RAM
Phantom Z -> 2.0GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6592 processor, 2GB RAM

Note: Phantom Z outrun Camon C8 when it comes to multitasking, running high demanding graphics games and applications. It'll be faster, smoother and more responsive than Camon C8 with multiple windows opened. 8-core is incomparable with 4-core and the 1GB RAM doesn't really help Camon C8 either.

Camera:

Camon C8 -> 13-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, dual-LED flash, 5-megapixel front camera with LED flash
Phantom Z -> 16-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash; 8-megapixel front camera with LED flash

Note: In this aspect, Camon C8 doesn't stand a chance against Phantom Z when it comes to picture pixel and quality. Both are photocentric we won't deny, but one has got it more than the other.

Storage:

Camon C8 -> 16GB of built-in storage, expandable up to 32GB
Phantom Z -> 32GB of built-in storage, external storage not supported.

Note: If you're asked to choose between 16GB and 32GB, you'll probably go for 32GB, even a 10 years old kid will do that. But, what if you're asked to choose between 16GB and later get an additional 32GB or 32GB and get none later? Camon C8 has a chance here. Android System will already taken roughly 4GB out of 32GB on Phantom Z leaving just 28GB which you'll have stick with forever, but even if 4GB is taken from 16GB on Camon C8 you can expand it further anytime as you wish.

Connectivity:

Camon C8 -> Dual-SIM (GSM+GSM), Bluetooth 4.0, Wifi, 3G HSPA+, GPRS/EDGE, GPS, FM radio, and Micro-USB.
Phantom Z -> Dual-SIM (GSM+GSM), Bluetooth 4.0, Wifi, 3G HSPA+, GPRS/EDGE, GPS, FM radio, and Micro-USB.

Note: Same old thing. Non is impressive and disappointing.

Battery:

Camon C8 -> 3,000mAh battery.
Phantom Z -> 3,030mAh battery.

Note: Both packs roughly the same capacity, but considering octa-core chipset and 1080p display in Phantom Z which requires more power than quad-core chipset and 720p display in Camon C8, it may not last longer. Camon C8 kills Phantom Z in this aspect but didn't dispose its body. Its not that Phantom Z doesn't have a good battery life, it does, but Camon C8 will have a better one.

So, it seems Phantom Z is still a good choice afterall, that is if you don't mind the outdated Android 4.4 KitKat OS it runs. But if you do, then Camon C8 might be the right choice for you. And by the way, we expect Camon C8 to cost twice less than Phantom Z and that's a big save.

Update

Tecno Camon C8 is finally out and readily available. Turns out we are right, it costs twice less the price of Phantom Z. By now, we know you'll have already make your choice. You can order any of the two from below links.

  1. This is a very interesting versus. hehehe! Would love to read more. I, however, think you cheated the Camon C8 in the Camera category. I think there's more to the camera than what you just highlighted on here.

  2. The "more" we can pointed out is its dual-LED flash. However, there are two types of flash commonly used, LED and Xenon, but both also differs in watt just like a normal bulb. We do not yet know how bright the dual LED of Camon C8 will be because it's yet to be released so we can not over judge it. Also, Tecno are fond of not specifying the type of sensor used in its device camera, so we cannot judge their picture quality until we try it out ourselves.

    We only compare Camon C8 and Phantom Z camera megapixel which mostly determine the output pixel of picture and sometimes its quality, and so far Phantom Z got it more in this aspect.
