They can store up to 20 hours of heart rate data underwater which can later be synchronize to compatible Garmin device when out of water. According to Garmin vice president of worldwide sales, Dan Bathel "The HRM-Tri and HRM-Swim add another level for triathletes and swimmers, offering them the most comprehensive data to help them train for and achieve their goals."

The smallest and lightest of the two, HRM-Tri, can also record heart rate data during leg exercise where it can provide advanced running dynamics, including cadence, vertical oscillation and ground contact time, making it 2-in-1, for underwater and for land.

The HRM-Swim on the other hand is meant for capturing heart rate during pool training session. It comes with non-slipping straps that stays in place during push-ups, minimizing drag effect through the water. Captured heart rate data underwater can be send to compatible swimming device. Also, it can synchronize real-time data and summaries with compatible monitors during rest.

The Garmin HRM-tri costs $129 USD and comes with a replaceable battery that can last for 10 months while Garmin HRM-Swim costs $99 USD and includes a battery that last up to 18 months. Both device will be available starting from Q3 2015.
