How thin do you need your tablet to be? Last year’s Sony Xperia Tablet Z wasn’t exactly chunky but this one is catwalk thin. In fact, it’s just 6.4mm from front to back. You really notice this when you pick the tablet up – it feels almost impossibly thin, although to be fair it’s still clearly a solid piece of machinery that doesn’t creak when you flex it.

It’s a remarkable piece of engineering, mostly achieved by having a strong, super-light aluminium frame. And it means it clocks in at just 426g which is tremendous, and light enough for holding for extended periods.

The Z2 tablet takes all its design tips from Sony’s new smartphone, the Xperia Z2. Gloss black corners, chrome edging and glass-and-black front are common to both devices. But where the phone has a glass back, the tablet has a soft-touch rubbery finish which feels great in your hands.
