Microsoft has found turning Windows from a desktop operating system into a desktop+tablet operating system to be a difficult process, but the key advantage of the company's latest software is that you can run it on both a laptop and a tablet. As a result, the slew of tablet/laptop hybrids we're seeing — such as the Dell Venue 11 Pro and the Asus Transformer Book T100— give you the portability of a tablet combined with the typing convenience and power of a laptop.

The iPad is still selling in droves, but you can't run Photoshop on it or plug in a mouse; you can with a HP Spectre 13 x2 Pro. As tablet/hybrid laptops go, this is towards the top end of the scale. The model we tested will set you back a substantial £1,040 from the official HP online store and comes with an impressive specification list to match. This puts it in the same kind of area as Microsoft's own Surface Pro 2, though in both cases multiple configurations are available so you can pick one to suit your needs and budget.

Design:

This is one of very few tablets on the market that's larger than 10 inches: the iPad Air is 9.7 inches from corner to corner, the new Samsung Galaxy Note Pro measures 12.2 inches while the afore mentioned Surface Pro 2 comes in at 10.6 inches. As long as you don't mind carrying something that's a little heavier, this makes the HP Spectre 13 x2 Pro ideal for enjoying some movies or catch-up television. The full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution means that there's plenty of space on screen to run two apps side-by-side or to get into the nitty gritty of a spreadsheet, though as this is stretched over 13 inches you won't get the pin-sharp clarity of some other tablet displays.

Audio is provided by an integrated Beats Audio bar, providing an excellent level of sound performance to make the most of Netflix, Spotify or your application of choice....read more
